Pies and Lattes

There is a general perception for people in the wellness industry that we live nun like lives with only something green passing our lips to nourish our bodies. Many ascribe to the fitness fad fact of the 90’s that only people who have abs have control of their lives and that we should look to them as our models of perfection. I can tell you, from years of experience, that that idea couldn’t be further from the truth!

Those in fitness are there for a reason; the life of managed meals and prescribed training times for maximum growth potential is usually attractive to those who do not have control over some aspect of their lives. While meal planning, taking food everywhere and prioritising sleep is actually quiet helpful as a parent, it is not particularly social not does it embody the flexibility that is required when life doesn’t go according to plan. As a wise man once said to me; “no plan survives contact.”

I am a Pilates teacher who believes life is for living and we should enjoy our life and find the extraordinary in the ordinary moments. If that means eating a delicious Banoffee or Tiramisu donut from my friends at www.mintcakery.com or a nourishing pie from their sister store Ashby, then so be it. Deprivation only breeds excessive desire and often by categorising food as “good or bad” or as a “treat”, we set ourselves up for an unhealthy relationship with food; food is fuel- we need it to survive and the fact that we can enjoy it as well as nourishing our bodies and souls, is a privilege we can be grateful for.

Soul Food

We all need soul food! It is often assumed that because I am a part of the fitness industry, that I never eat chocolate or drink wine or eat cake. This couldn't be further from the truth! I follow a Flexitarian way of eating and this  phrase, coined by Dr Libby, perfectly describes how I choose to nourish my body. Flexitarians choose whole foods, based on their ability to fuel and restore but who are also partial to a glass of bubbles or slice of cake when the occasion calls for it! Because I look after my body on a daily basis, by providing it with goodness, I can have foods that are more for pleasure than nourishment. It is what we do in our everyday lives that affects our well being so if you are eating foods that are full of colour and life, then a slice of birthday cake, some wine with the girls or that block of chocolate around your period, won't matter. Food shouldn't be something we feel guilty about, we need it so start living your Best, Active life and fuel your body and your soul.

Clean Pancakes

My favourite Sunday breakfast: Pancakes. Who doesn't love them?

My super clean version uses whole foods, including a Kiwi favourite, to create a delicious, nourishing version of the classic pancake.

Feijoa Pancakes

4 eggs

1 banana

2 Tbspn mashed feijoas (or berries)

1 Tbspn coconut flour

Tsp baking powder

Blend all ingredients together. Cook in coconut oil (or a non-stick pan) on a medium heat for a minute or so on each side.

Finish with a drizzle of maple syrup and some Cathedral Cove Coconut Yoghurt! Yum

The Daily Nourish: Overnight Oats

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

This is how I nourish my body at breakfast time - with overnight oats.

Oats, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, LSA (ground linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds), chia seeds, quinoa flakes, buckwheat and coconut, all soaked overnight in almond mylk or water. Soaking seeds and nuts activates them and enhances their nutritional value.

I like to top my overnight oats with coconut yoghurt, protein powder and this morning's treat: feijoas! My fav fruit! Food of the gods.

How will you nourish your body this morning?
